I’m starting to think that the new base of the Republican Party (not the old base of small business people) isn’t so concerned about minimizing shootings, or in general, reducing the place of interpersonal violence in human interaction. In the old days, “being able to go unarmed on the streets” was seen as the indicator of civilization. But the new base is favors even “unpermitted concealed carry”, which is neither historically accurate (in federalist times firearms could hardly be concealed) nor clearly aligned with reducing violence. Indeed the new base seems to come from the US cultural faction (Appalachian whites, backwoods, Scots-Irish) that is the most violent, and their politics seems to be aligned with increasing rather than decreasing the role of interpersonal violence in US society.
