  1. It’s interesting that at least one effort is underway. The Trump administration changed the rules for setting the premiums of the federal flood insurance program so that rates will resemble actual (current) risks, which are generally a lot higher than the current rates. Oddly, this seems to have not required a change in the law, the previous highly-subsidized rates weren’t actually mandated in law. And I notice that there isn’t any movement afoot in the Biden administration to reverse this, although the homeowners are only starting to squawk.

    The benefit will be indirect, though. As living on the beach stops being subsidized, people will start doing less of it, which will make us more resistant to flooding and storms.
