Carl Sagan (IIRC) once noted in passing that the US’s and USSR’s armies in Europe were each other’s reason for existing, and so formed a natural coalition against the rest of us. But he didn’t note that the politics also ensured that they did not fight each other, and two unused armies consumed a lot of money but were probably the best stable choice.
Unfortunately in this one, it seems like Netanyahu and Hamas get political benefit from keeping the war hot.
