For most of my adult life, members of the other party at the time have made overheated speculations about “What if the current president refuses to leave office?” But for the first time, the current president is actually stoking these fears.
OTOH, as long as other Republican bigshots dismiss it all as a Democratic conspiracy theory, they’re signaling to each other that they wouldn’t be on board for anything like this. And political authority/power/legitimacy is a social construct, if nobody thinks you have it, you don’t have it.
